It seems to me like our culture is turning into one gigantic eating disorder. We don’t know how to simply feel hunger and eat anymore, not without thinking about calories, clogged up arteries, being too fat or too skinny or getting cancer or some dangerous food-related sickness. I’d like to blame the hyped up consumerism for that, but it’s not really what I want to write about.
There is a stigma attached to fast food. I believe this to be related to, or even a part of the fact that obesity is considered to be something bad. Ugly, lazy, unhealthy, dangerous… We’re force fed with an anorexic ideal of beauty through the media – movie stars and pop singers and fashion models – constantly flashing images of “this is pretty” , combined with commercials for McDonald’s and Burger King. We’ve screwed everything up. Twisted it around until we don’t really recognize our own basic needs for what they are anymore.
Consumer-society, stress and commercialized fast food empires leads to a few hamburgers too many… which leads to obesity. The size zero “show your ribs through your shirt” ideal of beauty on the opposite side of the scale… leads to trouble, to decease and discrimination.
Fat people being shoved away to the “other side of the store” or the back of the catalogue.
We are responsible for our own well being and for what kind of food we put into our bodies, no matter how much pressure we’re subjected to (even though we should never, ever underestimate the power of pressure!). But do we really know what’s healthy and what’s not anymore? Or is it all just a matter of opinion now? Of which diet-self-help-book you decide to buy or which TV-channel you choose…
